How to install XAMPP on Ubuntu and run WordPress Offline

What is XAMPP?

XAMPP is a free and open source Apache distribution containing MariaDB, PHP, and Perl developed by Apache Friends. XAMPP stands for Cross-Platform (X), Apache (A), MariaDB (M), PHP (P) and Perl (P). It is a simple, lightweight Apache distribution that developers can use to create a local web server for testing and deployment purposes.

In this tutorial we will show you how to setup XAMPP server on your Ubuntu Linux Machine and also run WordPress on it.

Installing XAMPP on Ubuntu

  • Download the latest version of XAMPP from here. If you are using a 32bit OS make sure you download the 32bit version and if you are using 64bit OS make sure you download the 64bit version.
  • Now browse into the folder where you downloaded XAMPP, right click on empty space and click “Open in terminal”
  • Now we need to make the downloaded file executable. To do that type in or copy paste the below line of code. Make sure you replace “xampp-linux-x64-7.0.8-0-installer.run” with the name of your downloaded file.
sudo chmod +x xampp-linux-x64-7.0.8-0-installer.run
  • Now to run the installer, type in or copy paste the following line of code. Again make sure you replace
“xampp-linux-x64-7.0.8-0-installer.run” with the name of your downloaded file.
sudo ./xampp-linux-x64-7.0.8-0-installer.run
  • Now the installation window will popup. Follow the instruction on the screen to install XAMPP.

Installing and running WordPress on XAMPP

We will now install WordPress using Bitnami WordPress installer.

  • Download Bitnami WordPress installer from here
  • Now like before browse into the folder where you downloaded the installation file, right click on empty space and click “Open in Terminal”
  • Type in the following command. Make sure you replace “bitnami-wordpress-4.5.3-1-linux-x64-installer.run” with the name of the file you downloaded
 sudo chmod +x bitnami-wordpress-4.5.3-1-linux-x64-installer.run
  • Now to run the installer type in the following command. Once again make sure you replace “bitnami-wordpress-4.5.3-1-linux-x64-installer.run” with the name of the file you downloaded
 sudo ./bitnami-wordpress-4.5.3-1-linux-x64-installer.run
